Livestock breeding and auctions in Paraguay and Argentina

Overview

Livestock producers and organizations in Paraguay and Argentina continue to conduct auctions and genetic evaluations to improve cattle breeding standards. Recent activities in Paraguay include Ganadera Los Lazos auctioning 80 Brangus bulls focused on feed conversion and carcass characteristics, while Freemont SA hosted an elite Brahman female auction featuring animals selected through 15 years of reproductive biotechnology. Additionally, the ‘Los Magníficos’ event, organized by La Tropa, Ferusa Negocios, and Reprocon, brought 470 breeding bulls of the Brahman, Braford, Brangus, and Nelore breeds to market. Raúl Appleyard of Ferusa Negocios noted the goal was to concentrate a significant volume of breeders in a single day to allow producers to meet needs efficiently.

In Argentina, Estancia La Pelada recently offered 250 Braford and Brahman breeders adapted to northern regional conditions. Academic efforts continue through the Universidad del Centro Santa Fe, which is evaluating Limangus bulls in grazing systems to provide strategic data for regional improvement. In Chaco, a historic auction in Fuerte Esperanza involved 386 animals; supported by the provincial government, the initiative aimed to reduce costs by eliminating commissions and providing freight assistance. Production Minister Oscar Dudik stated such programs help producers access competitive markets.

Market demand remains active, as seen in the Las Talas auction in Paraguay, where Brangus, Brahman, and Braford bulls saw sustained interest. Previous high-profile sales include a record-breaking Angus bull sale in Bahía Blanca and steady demand at the Borsalino Hermanos auction in Mercedes.
