Livre party opposition to Portuguese government

The Livre party has entered a period of heightened opposition against the PSD/CDS-PP government in Portugal, specifically targeting the administration’s handling of the 2027 State Budget and labor reforms.

Spokesperson Isabel Mendes Lopes initially accused the government of “arrogance” and attempting to bypass parliamentary scrutiny by refusing to negotiate on key issues and selectively engaging with political parties. Lopes also warned that the government was attempting to pass labor reforms in stages to circumvent previous parliamentary rejections, particularly regarding parental leave protections for single-parent families.

Following these criticisms, Livre announced a series of specific budgetary proposals. These include the creation of a national mobility pass to replace the Green Railway Pass, increased family allowances, and the establishment of a public network of nursing homes. The party also proposed a ‘social inheritance’ fund of approximately 5,000 euros for every newborn, to be accessed at age 18. Livre continues to challenge the government’s claim that there is little room for amendments during the budgetary process.
