Local political and social disputes in Spain

Overview

Local political and social disputes have emerged across various Spanish municipalities. In Alcoi, political groups have criticized the municipal government for prioritizing aesthetic projects and festivals over housing, public services, and the maintenance of urban gardens.

In other regions, issues range from crime statistics and residency fraud to urban decay. In Santa Coloma de Gramenet, data indicated an 8.5% reduction in crime during the first half of 2026. In Castelló d’Empúries, proposals were made for a ten-year recovery plan for the Delta Muga area to combat illegal occupations and lack of maintenance.

In the Valencian Community, tensions arose in Sagunt regarding the use of an AI-generated poster featuring an incorrect version of the ‘senyera’ flag, as well as local protests over parking restrictions near the Roman Theatre. Additionally, in La Granja de la Costera, residents held a binding vote to preserve the tradition of 24-hour church bell ringing following a noise complaint.
