Lombardy public transport ticketing upgrades

In late July 2026 the Lombardy region began rolling out new fare technologies aimed at simplifying travel and encouraging multimodal, sustainable mobility.

On 23 July, the province of Lecco introduced EMV contactless payments on Arriva Italia buses. Passengers can tap in and out with Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, or digital wallets such as Google Pay, Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, with the system calculating distance‑based fares and applying a maximum charge if the exit tap is missed. One card may cover up to eight riders, while traditional ticket channels and the Arriva MyPay app remain available.

A week later, Lombardy’s public‑transport operators launched integrated ticket solutions across trains, metro and buses. A tutorial showed how commuters and tourists can combine ATM metro tickets, Trenord regional rail services and car‑sharing apps using digital wallets, QR codes and combined fare options. Additionally, Trenord and ASF Autolinee unveiled the €15 “Como Open Pass,” linking any Lombardy train journey with unlimited bus travel throughout the Como area for a full day, promoting sustainable tourism and reducing private‑car use.
