Loreto gender-based violence prevention initiatives
Overview
Following the killing of Luigia ‘Gina’ Fortunato on July 9, the municipal council of Loreto unanimously approved an action plan to combat gender-based violence.
Promoted by councilor Daniela Romanini, the agenda focuses on prevention and cultural change through several initiatives. These include school-based educational programs, public awareness campaigns, and the strengthening of the local Family Centre. The plan also involves participating in the national ‘Posto Occupato’ project and installing a ‘red bench’ as a symbol. To ensure ongoing awareness, the municipality will establish an annual public event every July 9.
Mayor Moreno Pieroni noted that addressing gender violence requires investment in education and prevention rather than relying solely on courtrooms.
