An investigation by Proceso suggests that the former president’s sons—José Ramón, Andrés Manuel, and Gonzalo López Obrador—expanded business activities in the pharmaceutical, energy, mining, and telecommunications sectors following their father’s 2018 ascension to the presidency.

While President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Prosecutor’s Office have denied any active judicial investigations into the family, reports indicate a perceived distancing between the current administration and the former president’s children. This follows previous controversies regarding the sons’ private meetings with high-profile businessmen in Mexico City, which critics noted contradicted the austerity discourse of the previous administration.

In Veracruz, scrutiny continues regarding the employment of relatives. Governor Rocío Nahle has defended the hiring of three relatives as “prepared professionals,” though one female employee’s salary prompted an internal review. Additionally, Pedro López Herrería, a nephew of the former president serving as an advisor to the Veracruz Secretary of Government, has faced backlash over social media posts showcasing luxury travel and high-end goods. While critics contrast this lifestyle with his reported government compensation—which reaches approximately 27,583 pesos monthly including extra gratifications—Secretary of Government Ricardo Ahued has defended Herrería, asserting his duties are legitimate and his family ties should not be used to discredit his work.
