Lucas Moura returns to action amid contract uncertainty

Overview

Lucas Moura has officially returned to professional football following a five-month absence caused by a total rupture of his right Achilles tendon. On October 9, 2026, Moura appeared as a second-half substitute during São Paulo’s 2-1 victory against Vitória at the Morumbis stadium. His entry was credited with changing the team’s dynamic, specifically during the buildup to Jonathan Calleri’s second goal.

Following his return, the 34-year-old forward addressed uncertainty regarding his future. While Moura expressed a desire to remain at the club, his current contract expires in December 2026, and formal negotiations for an extension have not yet begun. He noted that the club has approximately eight matches remaining in the Brasileirão to evaluate his performance before a decision is made, warning that he could become a free agent in January if no agreement is reached.

Recent reports indicate that the delay in contract discussions is linked to São Paulo’s upcoming presidential elections in December. The current administration, led by President Harry Massis, has reportedly decided to postpone decisions regarding Moura’s renewal to avoid committing the next administration to long-term financial obligations amidst political instability. Moura has indicated a willingness to negotiate terms, including a potential salary reduction, provided the club presents a compelling sporting project.
