Luka Mesec drug use allegations

Overview

Luka Mesec, coordinator of the Levica party and candidate for mayor of Ljubljana, has faced allegations of past cocaine use made by Dušan Smodej. Mesec denied the claims, describing them as “fantasies and planned lies” intended to discredit him during the mayoral election.

To address the accusations, Mesec released toxicology reports from the Institute of Forensic Medicine showing negative results for cocaine, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, and THC. However, the controversy has expanded as political opponents and critics have questioned the efficacy of urine testing.

Critics, including MP Aleksander Reberšek and influencer Aleksandar Repić, have called for hair follicle testing instead. They argue that while urine tests only cover a window of approximately 48 hours, hair testing can detect substance use over a period of several months.
