Lukavac elderly care home fire and investigation

Overview

A fire broke out at the ‘Ahmedić’ elderly care home in Mosorovac, near Lukavac, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the early hours of September 17, 2026. The incident initially left two residents in serious condition at the University Clinical Center Tuzla, with one patient requiring mechanical ventilation due to severe burns and inhalation injuries.

By September 24, it was confirmed that both injured residents had died. Following the fatalities, the Tuzla Canton Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation that identified “numerous irregularities regarding fire protection, user safety, and social and health care measures” at the facility.

The owner of the institution, Edin Ahmedić, was arrested on suspicion of committing serious criminal offenses against public safety and property. While the Lukavac Municipal Court denied a request for his detention, allowing him to remain free during the ongoing investigation, the prosecution has indicated plans to appeal the decision.
