Lymphoma awareness and early detection efforts

The medical community continues to emphasize the necessity of early symptom detection for lymphoma, particularly in observance of World Lymphoma Awareness Day on September 15.

Hematology specialists are urging the public to recognize ‘silent signals.’ Key warning signs include painless, persistent swelling in the neck, armpits, or groin, as well as ‘B symptoms’ such as unexplained high fever, severe night sweats, and involuntary weight loss exceeding 10 percent within six months. While medical professionals note that infections or autoimmune diseases can also cause lymph node enlargement, they warn that lumps that are hard, rubbery, or fixed to surrounding tissues are significant clinical alarms.

Global data highlights the scale of the disease: in Turkey, approximately 7,300 people are diagnosed with lymphoma annually, while in Brazil, estimates for the 2026-2028 period project over 15,000 new cases per year. Despite these figures, early detection remains a decisive factor in improving outcomes. Modern treatments have significantly improved prognosis, with experts stating that over 80 to 90 percent of Hodgkin lymphoma patients can achieve long-term control or a cure.

Recent clinical cases underscore these warnings. In Taipei, emergency physician Wu Zhaoxin issued a warning following the death of a man in his 20s diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The patient, identified as Mr. Chen, had experienced persistent fevers and heavy night sweats for over three months, which he initially dismissed due to his athletic lifestyle. Even after a painful lump appeared behind his ear in the fourth month, he resisted a cancer diagnosis, highlighting the danger of ignoring prolonged, unexplained symptoms.
