Macerata health authority staffing changes

In late July 2026 the regional health authority (AST) in Macerata announced a plan to remove doctors from night‑shift duties at the Points of Primary Intervention (PPI) in Recanati and Tolentino, raising concerns about emergency and primary‑care coverage. At the same time, the retirement of Dr Patrizia Caciorgna in San Severino left 1,600 patients without a regular physician, highlighting a broader shortage of primary‑care doctors.

Two days later AST opened a temporary day‑time ambulatory at the Casa della Comunità in San Severino to mitigate the gap created by the retirement. The clinic operates weekdays with extended hours on Wednesdays throughout August, offering visits, prescriptions and continuity of care. Meanwhile, the authority continues to consider eliminating medical presence during night hours at the Recanati emergency triage unit, proposing that only a nurse remain on site to triage patients and coordinate with on‑call physicians. Local officials, including Health Assessor Paolo Calcinaro and the mayor, have expressed surprise and are seeking clarification on the proposed night‑staffing cuts.
