Macerata landfill site selection dispute

A dispute has emerged in the Macerata province regarding the selection of a site for a new landfill. The controversy began with protests by the No Discarica Montefano Committee in Pieve Torina. Alessandro Gentilucci, President of the Province of Macerata, defended the legitimacy of the protest but argued that Pieve Torina was an unsuitable location for such demonstrations due to the town’s ongoing earthquake recovery. Local officials, including Montefano Mayor Angela Barbieri, challenged claims made by Gentilucci regarding the timing of administrative meetings.

The situation has since escalated into a political conflict over the technical ranking of potential disposal sites. Mario Morgoni, a former Democratic Party (PD) deputy, alleged that the established ranking of sites was unilaterally altered for “political and electoral convenience,” claiming that smaller municipalities opposing certain parties were prioritized. In response, Vice President of the Province Luca Buldorini suggested that previous PD positions would have placed the facility in the provincial capital. Morgoni maintained that any modifications to site rankings must be conducted through transparent and objective consultation.
