Madhya Pradesh monsoon flooding and river overflows

Heavy monsoon rains in Madhya Pradesh have caused widespread flooding, necessitating large-scale rescue operations and significant infrastructure disruptions. Initial reports indicated that emergency response teams, including the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), had saved 527 lives across several districts. Notable rescues occurred in Sehore, Vidisha, Bhopal, and Khandwa following dam breaches and strong river currents. As flooding intensified in eastern districts such as Rewa, Dindori, Panna, Satna, and Chhatarpur, authorities in Rewa rescued over 4,000 people, housing thousands in relief camps. In Mauganj, the flooding of Naigarhi village by the Ashtabhuja River left four construction workers stranded, with one reportedly swept away. Infrastructure damage included the closure of the Dindori-Mandla State Highway due to the Khermer River overflowing a bridge. By late August, the situation in Satna district reached critical levels as the Mandakini River rose 8 to 9 metres above the danger mark, breaking a 23-year record. In the pilgrimage town of Chitrakoot, the Ramghat area became completely submerged, inundating shops and religious sites such as Gupt Godavari and Arogyadham. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed for rescue operations. Widespread waterlogging was also reported in Birsinghpur, Kotar, and Nagod, while the Bansujara dam was forced to open all eight sluice gates to manage water pressure. As of early September, the flooding in the Ramghat area has submerged approximately 400 shops and 20 to 25 hotels, causing significant expected losses for local businesses. In Satna, flooding has disrupted daily life, with water entering homes, shops, and the local BJP office. The inundation of the political office led PCC Chief Jitu Patwari to mock the state government’s development claims on social media. In response to rising water levels, the Satna district administration declared holidays for all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers on September 2 and 3.
