Madiun corruption and extortion trial
Overview
A corruption trial involving the inactive Mayor of Madiun, Maidi, has revealed widespread bribery and extortion practices. During testimony at the Surabaya Tipikor Court, Thariq Megah, the Head of the Madiun City Public Works and Spatial Planning Department, stated that approximately Rp2.5 billion in project fees were collected in 2025. He alleged these funds were distributed among various parties, including Rp1 billion to the local police (Polres), Rp500 million to the regional police (Polda), and up to Rp900 million to the prosecutor's office.
Following investigations by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), prosecutors have requested a prison sentence of seven years and two months for Maidi. The charges include extortion and gratification, specifically involving requests for funds from companies seeking permits under the guise of Corporate Social Responsibility programs, as well as a 4 percent fee related to a road maintenance project. Prosecutors have also requested that Maidi pay restitution of over Rp8 billion and a fine of Rp205 million.
