Madrid derby refereeing and disciplinary dispute

Overview

Following the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, the Spanish refereeing body (CTA) conducted a review of officiating disputes. The CTA partially supported Real Madrid’s complaints, determining that Lee Kang-in should have received a direct red card for a tackle on Federico Valverde and that VAR should have intervened. However, the commission did not validate all claims, ruling that a tackle by Cristian Romero on Jude Bellingham was reckless but did not warrant a red card, and upholding a dismissal issued to Dean Huijsen.

Subsequently, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Disciplinary Committee issued several sanctions. Dean Huijsen received a one-match suspension, while Real Madrid’s Pedro Luis Ferreira and Atlético de Madrid’s Ignacio Pablo Vercellone were handed one-match bans. The committee also cited Jude Bellingham and Cuti Romero for dangerous play. Additionally, Real Madrid received a formal warning regarding adherence to match schedules following a delay in the second half of the derby.
