Madrid-Guadalajara water rights dispute

Overview

The Canal de Isabel II has requested a water concession from the Tajo Hydrographic Confederation to supply Madrid with up to 50 million cubic meters per year from the Sorbe River. Specifically, the request targets the Pozo de los Ramos dam at a rate of 8,000 liters per second.

This proposal has met opposition from environmental groups such as Ecologistas en Acción and WWF, who argue the extraction could threaten the water supply for 400,000 people in the Henares Corridor and damage protected habitats, including riverbank forests and native fish populations.

The dispute has also taken a political turn in Guadalajara. Pablo Bellido, the provincial secretary of the PSOE, accused the People's Party (PP) of prioritizing Madrid’s interests over those of the Guadalajara province. Bellido argued that the water is essential for local agriculture, livestock, tourism, and industry, and called on local leadership to defend provincial interests against regional extraction efforts.
