Madrid railway infrastructure maintenance
Overview
Madrid is undergoing extensive railway infrastructure improvements affecting several Cercanías and Metro lines.
In mid-August, the Cercanías C-5 line was set to reopen the section between Villaverde Alto and Embajadores on August 17, following a month-long closure for works at the Atocha station. This project, part of the third phase of works at the Atocha Cercanías station, involves an investment of approximately 56 million euros and aims to restore direct service between the metropolitan southwest and central Madrid. Simultaneously, Metro de Madrid line 9B was scheduled to resume service between Arganda del Rey and Rivas Vaciamadrid after track and expansion joint improvements. Other ongoing Metro maintenance includes works on line 7 between Gregorio Marañón and Pitis, line 6 near Moncloa, and station remodeling at Cuzco on line 10.
By late August, further disruptions emerged as Renfe suspended service on the C-8b line between Cercedilla and Los Molinos until September 5 to facilitate the renewal of catenary poles. This suspension necessitated a special bus replacement service. Additionally, ongoing works at Chamartín and Atocha stations continue to cause overnight service alterations across multiple lines, including the C-2, C-7, C-8a, and C-10.
