Mahadev online betting app investigation
Overview
Investigations into the Mahadev online betting app syndicate have led to several high-profile arrests and financial seizures. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Abhishek Kumar at Hyderabad airport, alleging he coordinated betting panels, collected funds, and used illegal earnings to purchase real estate in Dubai. Kumar was placed in police custody following his arrival from Dubai.
In a separate development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) reported that television presenter Shefali Bagga surrendered Rs 1.2 crore in connection with the case. According to an ED chargesheet, investigators allege Bagga received approximately Rs 1.5 crore to create promotional videos for the syndicate. Bagga stated her involvement was limited to ‘unknowingly promoting a few brands’ and maintained she was unaware of the platform’s illegal operations.
The investigation continues to target a wide network of promoters, operators, and money launderers. The CBI has filed eight charge sheets against 100 individuals, while recent filings name 42 individuals, including Ebix Group chairman Vikas Garg.
