Malaria prevention initiatives in Nigeria

Overview

Nigeria is advancing its malaria prevention efforts through both domestic manufacturing and large-scale distribution campaigns.

In September 2026, the Swiss company Vestergaard Sàrl commenced local production of next-generation, dual-active ingredient insecticide-treated mosquito nets at its new Health Textiles Nigeria FZE facility. This plant, the first of its kind in the country, aims to produce approximately 10 million nets annually to combat growing insecticide resistance and reduce reliance on imports.

Concurrently, individual states have launched targeted distribution initiatives. Abia State announced plans to distribute nets across 17 local government areas starting in October, supported by larvae source management in high-risk zones. In Borno State, the government has procured five million nets for a door-to-door distribution campaign across 26 local government areas, utilizing digital technology for household registration to ensure transparency.
