Malaysia QR payment ecosystem growth

Entities: Wise Ltd. · PayNet · DuitNow · Malaysia · Yen Ting Chiam

Overview

In July 2026 Samsung Malaysia partnered with Maybank to embed the Maybank MAE Scan & Pay QR functionality directly into Samsung Wallet for Galaxy devices. The integration lets users make DuitNow QR payments without opening the MAE app and also display a personal QR code for merchants. The rollout includes cross‑border QR support in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia, and is tied to a Samsung Rewards promotion.

A week later Wise announced its own integration with Malaysia’s PayNet network, enabling Wise app users to scan any DuitNow QR code and complete instant MYR transfers. The service is being rolled out nationwide and also allows transfers via mobile numbers or NRIC numbers with recipient name verification. Wise’s rollout aims to cut reliance on intermediaries, speed up transactions, and extend QR‑based payment capabilities to other financial institutions through its API.

By the end of July, Wise confirmed a direct integration with PayNet, allowing customers to use the DuitNow QR standard and Transfer service within the Wise app. The feature is live with a progressive rollout; full nationwide support for all QR codes is expected in the coming weeks. Early trials reported occasional scan failures that Wise plans to resolve. The integration makes Malaysia the ninth market globally and the fifth in Asia‑Pacific where Wise has direct access to a domestic payment system, further strengthening cross‑border financial activity for travelers and residents.
