Malaysia-Thailand border security intensification
Overview
Security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border have intensified following a period of increased cooperation and subsequent regional unrest.
Initially, the Perlis Police Contingent and the Bukit Aman Department of Internal Security and Public Order (KDNKA) moved to strengthen security controls to reduce cross-border crime rates in the Perlis region. This effort included a leadership transition within the Perlis Police Contingent.
Following a surge of violence in three provinces of Southern Thailand—characterized by over 50 explosions, arson attacks on government offices, and tire burnings—Malaysian authorities further increased border security. In response to the unrest, a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province, and police officials advised the public to avoid conflict zones to protect citizens traveling near the border.
