Overview

In mid-September 2026, various cultural events involving traditional attire were held across Malaysia to celebrate national identity and promote tourism.

Initial celebrations included the Keretapi Sarong events in Melaka and Johor Bahru to mark Hari Malaysia. In Melaka, over 3,000 people from diverse ethnic backgrounds gathered at the Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum. In Johor Bahru, approximately 7,000 participants took part in a train journey and city parade as part of the Visit Johor Year 2026 campaign.

Following these events, the Malaysia Sarong Music Run took place in Kuala Lumpur, drawing more than 20,000 participants. The event featured a 5km run with music and cultural performances to support the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Tiong King Sing attended the run. The event also included a city parade and a drone light show, alongside a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysia Marathon and automotive partner JETOUR to promote local travel culture.
