Malaysian government transparency and anti-corruption drive

Overview

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has initiated a series of measures aimed at increasing transparency and combating corruption within Malaysia. Initially, the Prime Minister announced that starting next year, all government contract procurement details—including winning companies, contract values, and project progress—will be made accessible to the public to prevent waste and allow for community monitoring.

Speaking at the iFUTURE 2026 Leadership Summit, Anwar detailed that this initiative will cover development projects such as schools, hospitals, universities, and roads. By disclosing the identities of winning companies and the reasons for contractor selection, the government intends to enable local communities to act as monitors to evaluate if contractors are fulfilling their responsibilities.

Anwar has further addressed inherited systemic non-transparency in Parliament, stating that previous administrations allowed political interference to influence corporate ownership. He specifically cited instances where large companies and banking institutions, such as Multi-Purpose Holdings Berhad (MPHB) and RHB Bank, were allegedly forced into acquisitions or sales due to the influence of former finance ministers. To combat these issues, he emphasized that all information regarding corporate crimes must be investigated without exception, ensuring enforcement remains free from political meddling.

To bolster oversight, the government is considering a new Government-Owned Entities Bill to strengthen the governance of Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs). Expanding on this, Anwar stated in the Dewan Rakyat that institutions mandated to protect Bumiputera and Muslim interests, such as Tabung Haji, must serve as models of good governance. He argued that communal mandates should not excuse management weaknesses and that these entities must uphold strict standards of integrity and accountability to ensure they do not perform worse than other companies.
