Malaysian Immigration Department social media controversies

Overview

The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has addressed two separate incidents involving viral social media content.

In the first instance, authorities investigated the misuse of the department’s logo after a video surfaced showing a foreign national driving a vehicle marked with the JIM emblem. The investigation led to the detention of a Pakistani national who admitted to installing the logo and strobe lights on his vehicle for personal use. The operation also resulted in the arrest of the vehicle’s owner, an Indonesian woman found to be overstaying, and several car wash employees. Director General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban noted that such misuse can “cause public confusion and damage the agency’s integrity.”

In a subsequent matter, JIM filed a police report regarding a viral post in which a customer alleged improper treatment at the UTC Pudu Sentral Immigration Office. Following an internal review of CCTV footage and staff interviews, the department stated that several claims made in the post were “inconsistent with the facts.” The department has pledged to cooperate with the Royal Malaysia Police to clarify the incident.
