Mali and Senegal military reintegration and training

Overview

In early August 2026, Mali and Senegal conducted ceremonies focused on military reintegration and vocational training. In Mali, 394 participants completed basic training under the Disarmament, Demobilisation, Reintegration and Integration (DDRI) programme in Tombouctou. Simultaneously, Senegal’s Agency for the Social Reintegration of Soldiers (ARSM) awarded certificates to 45 trainees in Ouakam following vocational courses in agriculture, livestock, and bakery-pastry.

Later in August, Mali expanded its active military capacity by graduating 1,509 new soldiers into the Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR) at the Samanko National Hardening Center. This four-month training program focused on asymmetric warfare, tactical mobility, and the use of light armored vehicles. Colonel-Major Mamadou Souleymane Koné described the new recruits as “the shield of our populations and the nightmare of those who attack the homeland.”
