Mali security recruitment and motorcycle crackdown
Overview
In July 2026 Mali’s government announced a major expansion of its security forces, launching a recruitment contest for 1,500 positions across the National Police and the Civil Protection Corps. At the same time, President Brice Clotaire Oligui handed over 37 new motorcycles to the National Gendarmerie and Police as part of a broader modernisation programme aimed at improving rapid response and urban patrols.
Within weeks, police in Bamako used the newly equipped motorised units to carry out two operations targeting motorcycle theft. Raids in Kalaban‑Coura (1–17 July) resulted in five arrests and the seizure of four stolen bikes, while a follow‑up sweep in Yirimadio on 21 July led to three more detentions and the recovery of two motorcycles. Both actions were overseen by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection and the national police leadership, illustrating how the recruitment and equipment boost quickly translated into active crime‑prevention efforts.
These developments show Mali’s concurrent focus on building personnel capacity and deploying new resources to address urban security challenges, particularly motor‑vehicle‑related crime.
