Malibu mansion sinkhole damage

Overview

A massive sinkhole caused by heavy rains and coastal erosion linked to Hurricane Marie damaged an oceanfront mansion in Malibu, California. The incident, which occurred in September, destroyed part of the driveway, swallowed construction equipment, and damaged gas and water lines. The damage led authorities to declare a local state of emergency and issue mandatory evacuation orders for 31 nearby properties.

Actor Nicolas Cage, who purchased the home in 2024, reported that he and his family have been staying in hotels because the residence is currently uninhabitable. Cage has clarified his comments regarding being “a little bit homeless,” explaining that the phrasing was intended to describe the temporary unavailability of the home rather than a state of destitution. Speaking at the premiere of “Madden” and in interviews with outlets like Extra, the 62-year-old actor emphasized that he and his family are not destitute and are doing well financially. He noted the residence was red-tagged, which prevented him from participating in usual Halloween traditions, such as decorating or handing out candy.

Cage has been granted emergency building permits to perform repairs, including soil excavations and the installation of sandbag barriers to protect the foundation from further coastal erosion.
