Mall of America terror plot investigation

Overview

An 18-year-old man, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, was arrested and federally charged following an FBI sting operation. Investigators had been monitoring Mohamud since December 2024. Authorities allege he planned an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America in Minnesota, specifically targeting a Hmong Arts Celebration scheduled for October 24.

According to court documents and FBI testimony, Mohamud allegedly paid $600 to an undercover employee for an AK-47-style rifle, four magazines, and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition. Prosecutors claim he expressed a desire to kill between 30 and 60 people, specifically targeting non-Muslims and Jewish people, while expressing support for groups including ISIS, al-Shabaab, and al-Qaeda.

Following his arrest, a federal judge ruled that Mohamud will remain in custody, citing him as a flight risk and a danger to the community.
