Mandakini River flooding and encroachment investigation
Overview
Following significant flooding in late August that caused the Mandakini River to exceed its high flood level and destroy the Hanuman Dhara bridge, the Satna administration in Madhya Pradesh initiated an investigation into illegal encroachments. A five-member team was formed to identify structures obstructing the river's natural flow and to assess both private and government constructions in accordance with Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal guidelines.
By late September, heavy rainfall and reservoir discharges caused the Mandakini River to rise above the danger mark for a second time within 26 days. This resurgence of water levels prompted authorities in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to issue alerts and advise residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer ground.
