Maracaibo weather and flooding events
Overview
On October 21, the Maracaibo Mayor's Office reported that the city remained in a state of normalcy despite intense rainfall and electrical storms. Janner Pérez, president of the Municipal Institute of the Environment (IMA), noted that drainage channels showed no signs of overflow due to recent sanitation and cleaning work.
By October 26, the situation changed as Mayor Giancarlo Di Martino reported significant structural damage caused by the ‘El Súper Niño’ weather phenomenon. Flooding resulting from collapsed drainage systems most severely impacted the El Varillal sector. As a preventive measure, the mayor ordered the demolition of certain high-risk commercial structures, including parts of the Hotel Granada, to ensure public safety.
