Marine solar energy demonstration in Valencia
Overview
BlueNewables, supported by Naturgy, has installed Spain’s first pre-commercial marine floating solar energy demonstrator at the Port of Valencia. The 1 MW system utilizes two 500 kW PV-bos platforms named ‘Paiporta’ and ‘Catarroja’, which were constructed at the San Enrique shipyard in Vigo.
Funded by the IDAE with NextGeneration EU funds as part of the RENMARINAS VALENCIAPORT project, the initiative has moved into a testing and monitoring phase. Over the next two years, the partners will evaluate the technology’s performance, technical behavior, and maintenance needs under real maritime conditions. The project aims to demonstrate how modular floating photovoltaics can provide energy in areas where land availability is limited, such as ports and island systems.
