Mario Martone and Toni Servillo film collaborations
Overview
Director Mario Martone and actor Toni Servillo have collaborated on new Italian cinematic projects. Following the premiere of ‘Qui rido io’ at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, which depicts the life of 19th-century playwright Eduardo Scarpetta, the duo moved toward the production of ‘Scherzetto’.
‘Scherzetto’, an adaptation of Domenico Starnone’s novel, is being filmed on location in Naples and Milan. The film, a collaboration between Mad Entertainment and Rai Cinema, stars Servillo as Daniele Mallarico, a widowed illustrator. The narrative focuses on generational tensions as Mallarico returns to Naples to care for his five-year-old grandson.
At the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the film—also referred to as ‘Trick’—was screened out of competition. The story follows Daniele, a septuagenarian illustrator living in Milan, as he struggles with creative stagnation while working on illustrations for a new edition of Henry James’s ‘The Jolly Corner’. The film has been described as an “intense, bittersweet Kammerspiel” set in Naples that focuses on two characters at opposite ends of life.
During the festival, Servillo addressed concerns regarding overtourism and rising costs at the Lido, noting that high prices make it difficult for students and young people to attend, comparing the situation to housing crises in cities such as Lisbon. He remarked that while younger generations previously attended the festival with sleeping bags, current accommodation costs have become prohibitive, even noting rumors of seats being rented out.
