Maritime drifting incidents in Yucatán
Overview
Separate maritime incidents involving drifting fishermen have occurred off the coast of the Yucatán Peninsula.
In late September, three fishermen aboard the vessel ‘Renata’ were rescued near Chicxulub Puerto after a storm caused mechanical engine failure. The crew, who had been missing since Tuesday afternoon, were located by local fishermen and towed to shore for medical assessment.
In early October, a fisherman from Campeche was found alive near Celestún after being missing for several days. Following a mechanical failure, the individual used an improvised tarp sail to navigate while being drifted by currents and tropical depression activity. He was discovered approximately five kilometers from the shoreline showing signs of dehydration.
