Maritime industry adoption of dual-fuel vessels

Overview

Maritime shipping companies are increasingly deploying dual-fuel vessels to support decarbonization efforts.

In late August 2026, DP World named its first methanol dual-fuel containership, the ‘DP World London’. The 1,250 TEU vessel, built in China and owned by Germany’s Elbdeich Reederei, is designed for North Europe services and utilizes Exhaust Gas Recirculation technology to reduce emissions. The ship previously completed its first methanol bunkering in Rotterdam in June 2026.

Following this, Wallenius Wilhelmsen took delivery of the Arctic Tern, the first dual-fuel vessel in its Shaper Class series. This methanol-ready vessel is intended for automotive and heavy roll-on/roll-off cargo on routes between Asia and Europe. Additionally, the company has expanded its use of biofuels, transitioning vessels to Advanced FAME B100 to reduce greenhouse gas intensity and comply with FuelEU Maritime regulations.
