Maritime rescue operations in Indonesia

Overview

Maritime rescue operations have been conducted across various Indonesian waters to assist individuals in distress.

In September 2026, a speed boat carrying seven members of the Natural Resources Conservation (KSDA) group sank in the Karawai waters of Kaimana Regency, West Papua. A joint search and rescue team located all seven passengers, who had reached the coastline, and evacuated them safely to Kaimana.

In October 2026, two additional successful rescues were reported. In Kutai Kartanegara, security personnel from PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam rescued a resident after their small logistics boat overturned in the Mahakam waters. Separately, in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, a joint search and rescue team located three divers—comprising two Irish nationals and one Indonesian guide—who had been swept away by strong currents near Panga Batang Island.
