Maritime rescues in the Saronic Gulf
Overview
The Hellenic Coast Guard has conducted multiple maritime rescue operations in the Saronic Gulf near Fleves Island.
On August 14, authorities rescued between eight and ten passengers, including Turkish and Belgian nationals, from a Turkish-flagged sailing vessel that began to sink due to water ingress. The passengers were transferred to Vouliagmeni Marina in good health.
On August 16, the Coast Guard intercepted four Romanian tourists in a small inflatable boat. The group, which had been using oars to navigate, drifted due to strong currents after having consumed alcohol. The individuals were also transported to Vouliagmeni Marina and reported to be in good health. George Vallis, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Private and Professional Mariners, noted that the professionalism of the responding authorities prevented a more serious outcome.
