McLaren MCL40 technical development program

Overview

McLaren is executing an ambitious technical development program for its MCL40 Formula 1 car to improve competitiveness against rivals such as Mercedes and Ferrari. Following successful aerodynamic and floor redesigns that yielded progress after the Hungarian Grand Prix, the team has introduced further upgrades aimed at providing a performance gain of between two and three tenths of a second.

The development phase included a package debuted at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort featuring a new rear wing and revised rear brake ducts. To further enhance performance, the team also introduced new front wheel rims designed to help build tyre temperature more effectively, addressing previous struggles with generating front tyre heat.

These technical evolutions have contributed to significant momentum, resulting in consecutive victories in Budapest and Zandvoort. While team principal Andrea Stella noted that high-downforce circuits naturally suit the car’s current characteristics, the combination of floor adjustments, brake duct tweaks, and wheel developments has allowed the team to exceed internal performance expectations. To sustain this evolution throughout the championship, McLaren has managed its budget cap to ensure sufficient resources remain available for ongoing technical upgrades.
