Medalha Tiradentes honors Brazilian musicians

Overview

The Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) has recently honored prominent musical figures with the Medalha Tiradentes, the state’s highest honor.

In August, singer Marisa Monte received the medal at a ceremony featuring performances by Monte and the Camerata Jovem RJ. The award recognized her significant services to the society and the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Following this, the Alerj approved the granting of the medal to 96-year-old singer, actor, and activist Tony Tornado. The honor recognizes Tornado’s role in introducing soul music to Brazil and his history as a symbol of anti-racist struggle and cultural resistance.
