Medical emergency rescue in Pollino National Park

Overview

A hiker was rescued by helicopter in Pollino National Park after experiencing sudden chest pains while trekking near Orsomarso. Due to a lack of cellular coverage in the remote area between Monte Palanuda and the Argentino river valley, a guide had to climb to a higher elevation to alert emergency services.

The Calabria Alpine and Speleological Rescue Station and the Guardia di Finanza Alpine Rescue mobilized to the site. Because of the difficult terrain, the Salerno Fire Department utilized the ‘Drago’ helicopter to perform a winch rescue, airlifting the individual to a hospital in Belvedere Marittimo.
