Medical fraud investigation at Thai Ha General Clinic

Overview

Medical professionals in Vietnam have issued warnings regarding the importance of health screenings, noting that many patients remain unaware of chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure until symptoms become severe.

Concurrently, investigations into the Thai Ha General Clinic in Hanoi revealed widespread fraudulent practices. The clinic was accused of exaggerating minor infections into serious diseases to pressure patients into expensive, unverified treatment plans.

Following these findings, Hanoi Police initiated a criminal case and detained three individuals associated with the clinic in Dong Da District. Authorities discovered the clinic performed procedures outside its licensed scope, manipulated test results to increase revenue, and sold unlicensed herbal medicines produced with unverified ingredients and packaging.

Investigations by the Hanoi Department of Health and security forces confirmed the clinic prescribed unnecessary services not included in their approved technical list, such as circumcision and infrared or short-wave treatments.

Financial investigations revealed that management directed staff to use personal bank accounts to collect billions of VND to evade taxes and bypass official accounting systems. Consequently, the investigation has led to charges including a “serious violation of accounting regulations” and the “organizing [of] illegal entry for foreigners into Vietnam.” Authorities have urged former patients to contact investigators to protect their legal rights.
