Medical professionals are issuing warnings regarding the improper use of various medications and supplements.

Gastroenterologist Miguel Contreras Jorge noted that probiotics are most effective for individuals with disrupted microbiota due to antibiotic use rather than as a general treatment. In Spain, pediatric experts highlighted a lack of global consensus on probiotic supplementation for children, emphasizing that use should be guided by medical advice.

Further concerns have been raised regarding the long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for acid reflux, which can lead to magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiencies, as well as increased risks of bone fractures and digestive infections. Additionally, health officials are warning against the misuse of antibiotics to treat viral infections like colds and flu, a practice that contributes to antimicrobial resistance. In Romania, research indicates a high rate of self-medication without professional consultation.
