Overview
The University of León (ULE) has launched its first Medicine degree for the 2026/2027 academic year, following decades of local demand. The program is currently utilizing temporary facilities at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Vegazana and the Ponferrada campus while a dedicated building is prepared. Enrollment for the new cohort is approximately 79 students, aiming for a target of 88 to meet regional quality regulations, despite a waiting list of roughly 1,800 people.
Following the launch, the political group Unión del Pueblo Leonés (UPL) has raised concerns regarding enrollment discrepancies within the Castilla y León region. The UPL has formally questioned the Junta de Castilla y León and requested an assessment from the Ministry of Industry, Universities, Employment, and Commerce. The group alleges that while the University of León is adhering to its approved enrollment margins, the University of Burgos is reportedly offering 159 places, which exceeds its established implementation report and the permitted 10 percent increase.
