Memorial tributes for footballer Igor Protti

Overview

The cities of Livorno and Bari held memorial ceremonies to honor the late footballer Igor Protti on what would have been his 59th birthday. Protti, a former striker who passed away in June from an incurable illness, was celebrated for his sporting achievements and his connection to the cities.

In Livorno, the square in front of the Armando Picchi stadium entrance was officially named ‘Largo Igor Protti’. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the stadium’s Curva Nord, describing him as ‘the greatest player in the history of Livorno Calcio’. The plaque includes a QR code for fans to view footage of his career. Plans were also mentioned to create a life-sized bronze statue near the stadium tribune.

The tributes concluded with a charity football match between the ‘Vecchie Glorie’ (old glories) of Livorno and ASD Bari ’93. The match featured former players and institutional figures, ending in a 5-3 victory for the Livorno side. Proceeds from the event were designated for local charities and associations.
