Mendoza climate preparedness for Super Niño

Overview

In response to the ‘Super Niño’ climate phenomenon, authorities in Mendoza, Argentina, have implemented various preparedness measures to mitigate weather-related risks.

In San Martín, Mayor Raúl Rufeil extended the operations of a temporary homeless shelter in Palmira to remain open throughout the year. This decision follows forecasts of storms for September, with the Secretary of Government, Mauricio Petri, noting that the situation is being evaluated on a monthly basis.

Concurrently, the General Directorate of Schools (DGE) has accelerated maintenance and repairs in over 350 schools to prepare for anticipated intense rainfall between October and December. An investment of more than $65 billion is being utilized to repair or replace roofs. Additionally, the DGE has established a safety protocol to guide administrators on responding to storms and heavy rains during different phases of the school year.
