Mercedes-AMG V8 engine strategy

Overview

Mercedes-Benz is adjusting its powertrain strategy following feedback that the company underestimated demand for large-displacement engines. CEO Ola Källenius acknowledged that the transition of certain models, such as the C63, to four-cylinder plug-in hybrid setups resulted in a failure to retain the entire customer base.

In response, AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach confirmed a return to V8 engines for specific high-performance segments, including the expected launch of a V8-powered CLE 63. While the company maintains its electrification goals, it will not bring the eight-cylinder engine back to the C63 line due to high development costs.

Subsequent developments highlight the release of V8-powered performance models, such as the W205 generation C 63 S Coupé and the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung. The latter features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, delivering 637 horsepower.
