Mercedes-AMG V8 engine rollout and strategic expansion
Overview
In late July 2026, Mercedes-Benz announced a new 4.0-liter flat-plane crank V8 that debuted in the updated S-Class S580, delivering up to 530 hp and 750 Nm of torque. The company indicated that the engine would be evaluated for use in the long-awaited C63 sedan and E63 station-wagon, with a possible plug-in hybrid variant to meet emissions targets.
A week later, the brand unveiled two production models built around high-output versions of the same V8 architecture. The GT 63 Pro was presented with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 producing 604 bhp and 850 Nm, paired with a nine-speed MCT and all-wheel drive. The G 63 off-road SUV was also highlighted, featuring a 585-ps, 850 Nm V8, permanent four-wheel drive and a luxury interior.
By early August 2026, AMG CEO Michael Scheibe confirmed a strategic reversal of recent downsizing trends, announcing that the division is doubling down on combustion engines. New V8-powered models are expected to arrive before the end of 2026, beginning with SUVs such as the GT SUV. High-performance variants of the GT SUV are anticipated, including a GT 55 4matic+ producing 816 hp and a potential AMG GT 63 4matic+ capable of 1,169 hp. Production for these models is slated for Sindelfingen, Germany, utilizing axial flux motors from Berlin-Marienfelde and batteries from Webasto.
