Mersin economic and workforce development
Overview
Mersin is focusing on economic growth through vocational training and infrastructure coordination. Under the IMEP 2 Project, conducted with the European Union and the Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen, the region has seen success in employment initiatives, ranking first among 14 Turkish provinces. The project reported that 1,003 individuals participated in 75 vocational courses, leading to 484 job placements.
Local business leaders, including the President of the Mersin Organized Industrial Zone and the President of the Mersin Chamber of Commerce and Industry, have emphasized the need for unity between local institutions to address regional needs and vital infrastructure projects. Efforts are also being directed toward the tourism sector to better leverage the region’s coastline, heritage, and gastronomy. While the Çukurova International Airport has improved transportation, officials note a need for more consistent project momentum and better revenue distribution.
To support these goals, the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality is utilizing MERCEK centers to provide free vocational training. A recent 288-hour ‘Front Office and Reception’ course, organized with the Yenişehir Public Education Center, is currently training 14 participants through theoretical lessons, practical applications, and professional English instruction. Trainees learn skills such as guest reception, reservations, and hotel software usage to receive Ministry of National Education-approved certificates. The municipality plans to expand these offerings to include restaurant services and housekeeping training to further elevate local service standards.
