Messina municipal and administrative leadership changes

Overview

In early September 2026, the administration of Messina faced scrutiny regarding the appointment of board members for six municipal companies. Libero Gioveni, leader of the Fratelli d’Italia group in the City Council, questioned Mayor Federico Basile over delays in appointing 18 board members, suggesting the postponement might be an attempt to “maintain political balances ahead of regional elections.”

By September 7, Mayor Basile announced new appointments for the boards of directors of these municipal companies, replacing previous figures with new personnel largely drawn from the center-right. Analysts characterized these appointments as a “strategic laboratory” for Cateno De Luca and the Sud chiama Nord movement in preparation for upcoming regional and national elections in Sicily.

During this same period, the city also saw leadership changes in public security, as Chief Commissioner Francesco Cipriano transferred to Milan, with Andrea Interdonato succeeding him at the Messina Questura.
