Meteora-Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark initiatives

Overview

The Meteora-Pyli UNESCO Global Geopark has implemented several initiatives focused on environmental awareness, tourism development, and geological education.

In late September, the Geopark engaged in activities for World Cleanup Day, including a cleaning action by students at the Agiou Vissarion stone bridge. To coincide with World Tourism Day, the organization scheduled a meeting in Kalabaka titled ‘Geotourism Development and Local Partnerships’ to discuss economic opportunities and the integration of regional identity into the visitor experience.

Following these efforts, the Geopark collaborated with the Municipality of Meteora and the Directorate of Primary Education of Trikala to host an educational program for sixth-grade and special primary school students. Held on October 6 in observance of UNESCO International Geodiversity Day, the event ‘The Rocks of the Meteora-Pyli Geopark through the Eyes of Children’ utilized geological instruction to teach students about local minerals and the importance of protecting the region’s geological heritage.
