METLEN gallium production initiatives in Europe
Overview
METLEN CEO Evangelos Mitilineos has identified significant risks to European energy security and resource stability, citing geopolitical instability in Ukraine and the Middle East. He specifically highlighted the vulnerability of the gallium market, noting that China produces approximately 950 tons of the 1,000-ton annual global volume, which led to price volatility following 2023 export restrictions.
To address these shortages, METLEN is investing in a production unit in Boeotia, Greece, intended to be Europe’s first gallium production facility. The company aims to produce up to 50 tons of gallium annually, a volume expected to meet current European demand.
Mitilineos noted a significant cost advantage, with production costs below $300 per kilogram compared to European prices exceeding $3,000 per kilogram. While the company aims to eventually reduce costs to $100 per kilogram to resist Chinese market fluctuations, Mitilineos criticized the European Union for lacking the funding and long-term trade commitments necessary to support domestic producers. Consequently, METLEN is targeting international markets, having already secured sales for approximately 25% of its planned production to a US-based firm.
